SOC 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Hidden Curriculum, Symbolic Interactionism, Peer Group
Document Summary
Socialization: the lifelong process of social interaction through which individuals acquire a self-identity and the physical, mental, and social skills needed for survival in society. Essential for the survival and stability of society. What we believe about ourselves, our society, and the world is largely a product of our interactions with others (never experience disciple, have never been taught how to respect and interact by the relationship from adult to child) Agents of socialization: are all the persons, groups, or institutions that teach us what we need to know to participate in society. Family: the most basic and foundational agent of socialization. Functionalist interpretation: families are the source of procreation and socialization of children. Socialization reproduces parent"s class rather then challenging the conditions that currently exist. Socialization contributes to a false consciousness- a lack of awareness and a distorted perception of the reality of class. Middle and upper class income typically instill ideas of monetary and social success in children.
