Document Summary

Sept 12th, 2017: thinking about society, why are things the way they are, what is society , an institution, a group with common goals and beliefs, shared expectations and behaviours, a concrete abstraction . An important way to think about society. Idea #1: societies are the product of human interactions. Humans are the authors of their social work. They create patterns, in which some become really important: some become widespread and some stay local. Human beings are compelled to stay together and interact with one another. Very difficult to interact with someone in an unstructured way. There are patterns to interactions: for example, if a barista asks how your day is, the conversation would go on forever if there wasn"t structure. You go on to saying good or fine . You say this to get through to what you really want, which is your cup of coffee. Idea #2: while people create societies, societies are autonomous from any single person.
