Culture What is culture? What is it made of? Culture includes:  The knowledge, language, values, customs, and material objects that are passed from person to  person and from one generation to the next (textbook) Culture shock: Personal disorientation that comes form encountering an unfamiliar way of life No cultural trait is inherently “natural” to humanity: What is natural to our species is the capacity to create and learn cultural traits  The components of culture (5 major) Symbols Language Values Norms  Material objects (artifacts, tools, technology, art, etc.)  Symbols Anything that meaningfully represents something else to others: words, numbers, pictures,  colors, gestures, facial expressions, etc.  E.g. D – O – G  Insider/outsider Culture shock in Brindisi…  Symbolic meanings: conflict and change Vary even within a single society E.g. the hummer  Change over time E.g. blue jeans Language Set of symbols that express ideas and en
