Ethnic group - a group of people distinguished, by others or themselves, on the basis of cultural or nationality characteristics. Ascribed membership from birth, characterized by cultural traits and a relative sense of community. Race - category of people singled out as difference on the basis of real or alleged inherited physical characteristics such as skin colour, hair texture, eye shape, or other arbitrarily selected attributes. Contrary to popular belief it is not a biologically constructed reality. The notion of ethnic group is descriptive (ex. The notion of race is more political, a way to single someone out, implies some measure of exclusion works as a stigma. Race and ethnicity are engrained in our consciousness and can determine social ranking and who gets resources in society. There are differences and inequalities of all kinds among ethnic groups (family structures, values, roles, status, prestige, wealth, access to resources) Some groups are dominant and others are disadvantaged (minority position)
