SOC 2101 Lecture 7: Lecture 7
Document Summary
Seeking care when is a cold not a cold. Biological and social factors: sneezing, pain, throwing up / compared to how others feel and how you know you should feel. Symptoms and meanings: if you are in the shower and you feel a lump you interpret that as breast cancer or you. Acknowledge and interpret symptoms: we ignore symptoms when there is something we want to do, chronic illness, duration , occasion. Normalize the illness: oh it"s just a cold, we give it a name, integrate it into our life and move on. People know when they are ill: you might think you"re sick when you"re not, or you might not know you"re sick when you are. Able to describe their problem using medical terms. Who knows : you as a patient, it is happening to you, but the assumption is doctor knows best so we give them a certain amount of authority.
