Document Summary

10/07/16 (8) traditional media and contemporary society (cont. ) The elements that shape our consumption of news do so in a manner that reduces our inclinations to ask questions. The process of normalization is a process that makes us complacent in our consumption. This complacency is a characteristic of new media because we are not aware of it. An important aspect of this is framing which is something that takes place in all of our communication. It is part of the process that we use to make sense of things. We can think of framing in the literal sense like framing something such as a photograph. In framing a photo, the photo itself does not change, but our interpretation of it does. We think that our interpretation is unique and that the conclusion that we have come up with is different than the conclusion someone else would come up with in the same situation.
