January 10, 2014 • Technological determinism; o Technology as a separate sphere from society o Has its own internal and autonomous logic o But has impacts on society o BUT;  Too simplistic cause-and-effect sequence  Neglects human agency and social arrangements  Uncritically embracing of technological change, defensive adaptation to it, or rejection of it. • Successive stages of technological development o Frequently portrayed as revolutions which cause historical eras to be defined by a technology  Ie. Age of machinery, Age of automation, Atomic Age, Space Age, Electronic Age, etc. • Constructivist studies of technology (non-deterministic; not explained by innate logic but by human choices in the development age) o Investigate how technological artifacts are constructed o Offer empirically
