Assignment: undertake a semiotic analysis of something (object, text, picture, film) One of the theories that will allow us to do this is semiotics. It will teach us hot meaning is produced. We must first understand what language is and how language works. All gestures/signs work in the same way. i. e. middle finger, peace sign. Well all know this through shared experience and through common culture. We have all entered a common historical process. We can look at any of these signs and recognize that a peace sign does not mean two all though it can. i. e. tie on the door means someone doesn"t want to be bothered. Semiotics is a way of understanding culture as if culture was a language. It begins with the work of the swiss linguist ferdinand saussure. In his book he outlines the basic principles of a new linguistic system/theory that would be known as semiotics.
