Document Summary

Culture is a system of representation: what is representation, to carry the name of a certain area or group. I. e. people can represent their neighbourhood, sports team, a music group, and so on. I. e. wearing the colours of that particular group you want to represent: to faithfully carry the image, to express and experience some sort of social solidarity, representing is similar to power. People"s judgements are not necessarily the same as you wish them to perceive you as: what if someone else had control over your representation, somebody else separate from yourself can have control over your representation. We are not in control of how we are represented. Hollywood films depict people in certain ways (blacks, latinos, etc. ) People begin to actually believe that these representations are correct. Culture studies focuses on the political implications of society. Hegemony, semiotics, notions of representation and discourse, meaning and struggle.
