Document Summary
Sociological theory is heavily influenced by philosophy. Historicizing critical theory: used to characterize a theoretical current born after ww2 = the creation of the contemporary world, western societies in particular pride themselves on technological advances. We believe we have brought the best to humanity because of technological advances and science because they were considered the i(cid:374)st(cid:396)u(cid:373)e(cid:374)ts fo(cid:396) (cid:858)p(cid:396)og(cid:396)ess(cid:859) Progress = always understood in positive terms (always thought it was good for humanity) (cid:858)p(cid:396)og(cid:396)ess(cid:859) (cid:449)as supposedl(cid:455) that (cid:396)easo(cid:374) t(cid:396)iu(cid:373)phed. Progress and technological advancement can be nefarious as well. Can cost more to humanity than it brings to humanity. E. g. mass murder is possible because of technological advances. Modernity can be as obscure and nefarious as traditional technology. Main protagonists of critical theory: critical theory is tightly linked to the university of frankfurt in germany. = attended uni of frankfurt to study philo. Husserl (father of phenomenology) and heidegger (accused of inspiring the nazi regime) had huge impact on horkheimer.
