The goal of social theories should be to unearth/reveal what is hidden (e. g. the logic, ideas, and premises) that have grown in the world we live in. Because revealing what is hidden is like an instrument for change. Marx revealed to the proletariat how much they are exploited by the capitalists. The capitalist takes more from the proletariat than they think, they are not getting paid enough for all they do. On the other hand, there is a majority the proletariat who is left with nothing, exploited, paid poorly, Marx showed that at some point the tension would arise between these two because the proletariat would access a level of consciousness of its own condition. The economic base where production of goods and exchange take place. Culture and ideology everything not in the realm of economy/production. E. g. the state, school, education, legal system etc.
