Overview on Homo Erectus to Premodern Humans
Homo Erectus were more hunter than scavengers
Does homo erectus use FIRE? Very occasionally not always did they sit
around a fire to make food. There’s not enough evidence for that just
yet.
The change in the homo erectus body rapidly happened.
What tool traditions and hominins are associated with the lower ,
middle and upper Paleolithic?
Lower – acheulian
Middle – Mousterian
Upper – Magdelinean
Premoderns: “Homo Heidelbergensis “
This is date for : 600,000 ya (or earlier) to 125,000 ya
Era: (Middle Pleistocene)
Where: in Europe, Africa, Asia
Type of tool use for Homo Heidelbergensis:
Acheulian (west) & pebble tool (east)
New technique: Levallois
Examples: Stone & Wooden spears
What do they look like?
Large brow ridge
Low forehead
Large occipital on the back of their skull
They are more like humans
Their cranial capacity is larger than humans
Their brain case is more round than us
The maxiumum width of their skull is above their ears
Pentagonal
More vertical nose
Less robust than homo erectus
