Document Summary

Gender: male and female, margaret mead, coming of age in samoa (1928, sex and gender in the 1960s-1980s, ann meigs & marilyn strathern, don kulick on transgendered brazilian prostitutes, conclusions. Male and female are the product of culture and society. The anatomical differences between men and women tells us nothing meaningful about what makes us male or female. In animals, it"s hard to tell male or female. But humans are sexual dimorphic (there are physical differences between males and females). Males are typically larger, taller, heavier skeletons, proportionally more muscles, greater oxygen uptake, bigger heart, grip strength etc. Men are bigger because we had to chase down animals to get food. Women stayed in the cave and took care of children (cavemen explanation) anthropologists don"t care about this. From hunter gatherers we see that both men and women can both do this. What it means to be male and female, differ across the world. (including the roles).
