Document Summary

Mastering speech sounds is essential for learning language. 3 major components of the brain (r-complex, limbic system, neo-cortex)(in order of which parts of the brain evolved first) R-complex (aka reptilian) has to do with breathing, aggression, etc. Limbic system (paleomammalian) is the seat of emotion. Neo-cortex: found in some animals but it"s more evolved in humans. It"s 2/3 of the mass of the brain. Broca"s area: left side of the brain, largely controls speech. If there is a damage to this area, people can"t speak, even if their muscles are fine. Wernicke"s area: left frontal lobe, speech comprehension, there is no loss of hearing, but there is a loss in language comprehension. The growth of broca"s area is associated with the development of tools. Motor cortex is involved with voluntary control of any muscle. Most of the region is used to control the mouth and the hands.
