Kinship: a sense of relatedness, not necessarily by blood, determined by culture. Kinship system: predominant form of relatedness within a culture. Kinship naming determines how family members refer to each other. These systems are named after cultures; for instance, the two most popular are the eskimo (same used in america) and iroquois. 3 ways of being kin: descent, sharing, marriage. Refers to lineage, who is related by blood to who. 60% unilineal, lineage traced only through one parent. 45% patrilineal (father"s line), 15% matrilineal (mother"s line) When the lesser sex (female in patrilineal society, male in matrilineal society) marries, he/she joins the family of their spouse and is no longer considered part of their birth family. 40% bilineal, lineage traced through both parents despite last name taking practice in american marriage, american genealogy is bilineal. Bonds created through foodsharing, children sharing (godparents, fostering, adoption) Can be formal (legally recognized) or informal (create bonds between families)
