Document Summary

In contrast to a kinship diagram, genealogy is a schematic way of presenting a family tree, constructed by beginning with the earliest ancestors that can be traced, then working down to the present. Unilineal: system, which recognizes descent through only one parent, either the father or mother. In patrilineal system only male children are considered members of the kinship system, while female children marry out and become members of the husband"s lineage. Matrilineal cultures are horticulturalist economies in which women dominate the production and distribution of food and other goods. Associated with strong leadership roles for women: bilineal (40%) both lineages neolocal. Traces kinship from both parents equally to the child. This descent makes sense in foraging and industrial/informatics groups bc they both rely on a flexible gender division of labour in which both males and females contribute to make a living. Cousins forbidden or preferred depending on location.
