Document Summary

Symbols are used for thinking about the world and communication. Douglas says there"s a connection between ideas of taboo and ideas of cleanliness. Things you cant eat are considered unclean. We have a set of categories of boundaries and if a creature doesn"t belong in those categories, those are taboo. animals which are cloven-hoofed but are not ruminant (mammals that are able to acquire nutrients from plant-based food by fermenting it in a specialized stomach prior to digestion), the pig and the camel are taboo. The pig is forbidden because it doesn"t fall clearly into the category. It has cloven-hoofed, but it is not ruminant (can"t eat grass and digest it) If an animal has some or none of the categories, you can"t eat them (they are unclean) Said cannibalism is close to ego (the person) The further it is, the less cannibalistic it is. Kin is taboo because it is incest.
