ANT211H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Internal Fertilization, Biological Specificity, Viviparity
Document Summary
Nuclear family where there is a mated adult male and a mated adult female, caring jointly for their offspring. Solitary, atleast in the breeding season and meet to copulate only. Most males do not provide paternal care; their sperm is their sole contribution to the offspring and to the mate. In herds, animals like lions, chimpanzees, wolves show no signs of recognizing their infants. Sex in social mammals is usually in public. For example a female barbary macaque copulates with every other male in the troop and makes no effort to conceal it from other males. Chimpanzee troops, where one male and estrous female may go on consortship for a few days. The same female may also have public sex with other males in the same estrous cycle. Sex is separate from reproduction for a few species such as bonobos (pygmy chimpanzees) and dolphins.
