Anthro lecture Jan 13th – three observations – biological variation within all species – all spec ices capable of reproduction at a faster rate than food supply – competition for limited resources – certain individuals will be more reproductive than others – Five deductions – individuals with favourable traits have an advantage – traits are inherited and passed on to the next generation – environment determines which traits are favourable – as enviro changes over time, populations can change – ex. pepper moth (white and black pepper moths, black ones blend in better to tree’s) – random, determines favourable trait – over geological trim, success variations accumulate so that later generations may be distinct form their ancestors – geographical isolation may lead to a new species – Important to remember: – natural selection opera tones on the features (didn’t finish) – Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) – father of modern genetics – provided mechanisms of natural selection through breeding experiments with peas – determined how one trait passed from one generation to the next – came up with these theories purely on observation – he came up with the actual methods of natural selection – was doing breeding experiments with plants – came up with physical elements of natural selection – came up with these by testing the mix of tall and short plants and that they don’t commingle and become medium, they are desecrate units that don’t over lap – FOIL the TT x tt – creates Tt, Tt, Tt, Tt, Tt – make a pewter square – they are independent units that are sorting and combining – Principle of Segregation – each unit pari separates in gamete production, so that each gamete contains 1 member of each pair, during fertilization individual units come together – Principle of Independent Assortment – units (genes) that code for different traits assort independently of each other during
