Lecture 16­ Indian Policy (Continued) 1969 • Prime Minister: Trudeau • Indian affairs minister: Jean Chretien  • Multiculturalism • Proposed to re­appeal the Indian Act • Natives not happy­ only thing that ensured their interests and status • But was dropped  Aboriginal groups and organizations Status Indians­ defined by law (carries a certified card) • Can either be treaty or non­treaty • treaty­ ancestors had treaty with the government  • non­treaty­ ancestors did not have formal relations with British in forms of treaties • both have political organizations to protect their interests • Assembly of First Nations­ national umbrella group o Further legal, political and policy interests of the first nations • First nations­ what they prefer to be called • But the term “Indian” is used in the act to describe a specific type of people • Cannot really be changed Non­status Indians­ not legal Indians defined by Indian act • Could have lost status because married out or have ancestors that married out • Discriminatory division­ fixed by Bill C­31 • Now more non­status Indians • Represented by Congress of Aboriginal peoples Native women’s association • Foster interest of native women • Help get rid of discriminatory provisions  Métis  • One of three aboriginal peoples recognized in Canada • Represented
