ANT334H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Perichondrium, Ossification, Long Bone
Document Summary
Development = physical changes of human life to maturity. Endochondral bone formation = bone formation within cartilage. Many of the bones of the skull, and many flat bones develop through intramembranous ossification. Begins with formation with a membrane made of mesenchymal cells (which will ossificate into osteoprogenitor cells) Osteoprogenitor cells obsteoblasts (that will produce bone) Blood vessels will bring osteoblasts into the blood: secrete osteoid which will then mineralize, this will then form woven bone. The membrane is transformed into periosteum producing compact bone. Osteoclasts brought in by blood vessels: remove bone at center of mass, creates marrow cavity. Size and shape of ossification center is altered then to produce a recognizable bone shape: deposition of bone by osteoblasts, removal by osteoclasts, produces recognizable bone shape. Model of bone that is first produced in cartilage (which is then replaced by bone) Mesenchymal cells condense and form precartilage and perichondrium.
