Document Summary

The astronomers claudius ptolemy developed this model about the year 150. Every planet has a large circular orbit( deferent ) with earth at its centre = geocentric. Every planet moves on a second, small circular orbit( epicycle ) that travels along its deferent. We observe retrograde motion when the planet in on the inside of its epicycle orbit. Ptolemy"s model was accepted for about 1500 years. Ptolemy"s model was a great success in the year 150. From 150 to 250 to 350 more and more observations of the planets were made. Lot more data and the model had holes in it. In the 13th century, king alfonso x of castile had a team of astronomers calculate an update to ptolemy"s model. It took 10 years and was very complicated. He had learned that greek astronomers had tried a heliocentric model. He went back to the old idea of the greek"s that earth orbited the sun.
