Document Summary

Biology: scientific study of life order, energy processing, homeostasis regulation, reproduction, growth, evolutionary adaptation. Scientific method: designing experiments to test hypotheses and evaluate predictions. Example 1: giraffes have long necks due to male-male competition. Example 2: presence of venomous coral snakes affects preditation of mimic snakes. Reductionism: method of reducing complexity of system to make it easier to understand (vs the systems method, focusing on interactions and variables in whole biological system) Emergent property is exists for a complex system but not for one of its parts (ie) heart pumps blood but cardiac cell cannot pump blood. Theme 1 organisms interact with one another and with the environment. Theme 2 life requires energy transfer and transformation. Theme 3 structure and function are correlated at all levels of organization. Theme 4 cell (highly structured compartment) is the basic unit of structure and function. Theme 5 the continuity of life is based on heritable information. Theme 6 feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems.
