Document Summary

Ddt was the wonder weapon against insect pests. Ddt was used virtually everywhere when it was initially produced on an industrial scale. Eventually some warning signs came up that suggested that ddt had effects other than its intended purposes. The ddt concentrations in other organisms (such as phytoplankton and zooplankton) was higher that it should be. The higher up in the food chain, the higher the concentration of ddt was measured in organisms. Chemicals accumulate throughout the food (cid:272)hai(cid:374); the(cid:455) are(cid:374)"t take(cid:374) apart (cid:271)(cid:455) the organisms that inject them (they become more concentrated in the food chain) High ddt concentration in eggs caused the eggs to break when the mothers sat on the eggs (the eggs became too fragile) This was most seen in falcons, hawks, and birds such as this.
