Document Summary

Adult plants are expected to be found together. Seedlings don"t do well where flowers are: physical factors: prominent diagonal rock outcrop, rockiness and moisture inversely related. Less soil around rocky areas: gophers avoid rock. Gophers only spend time in soil areas. Only tunnel through soils, not rocks: reconciling these patterns. Few seeds that reach moist, deep soil are likely to survive and produce seedlings: long live perennials, takes time to grow under ideal conditions. But seedlings that grows in deep soil areas are likely to be killed by gophers before flowering stage. So average rate of seedlings is low because, if not away from parent, it will die if lands in deep rich soil, it will die before it can flower: rock refuge hypothesis. Seeds tend to die if they"re not away from parent. Rocky habitat serves as a refuge for lilies because gophers cannot reach the area.
