BIO205H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Galapagos Penguin, Sea Surface Temperature, Invasive Species
Document Summary
We will define the types of limits and how to model limited population growth. Understanding the factors limiting population growth provides for a better understanding of population dynamics and conservation efforts. Caribou curve on island without humans or other disturbance species. 1910 to 1938 ish - population grew steadily. The remaining 10 years after 1940"s the population decreased very quickly and the population died out by 1950. Could have been for multiple reasons - predators, disease, or depletion of food resources. Seems to be a lot of variability for periods - some rapid increase and variable decreases. Flightless crane population affects the penguin populations. Sea surface temperature variation also affects the penguin population. Density dependant factors - factors that depend on density and allow the population to perish or decrease. Resources of food - smaller population means more food resources for each individual and larger population means less food resources for each individual.
