Document Summary

It"s the voltage difference in potential energy between 2 sides of membrane when cell is at rest. It"s a product of ion distribution + changes in membrane permeability for na, k, ca, cl. All cells have different rmp some of these cells are excitable (neurons, muscle) which generate action potential, non-excitable cells have less polarized rmps like rbcs. When membrane is polarized, it gets a voltage which is the difference of potentials. By pumps and exchangers that shuffle ions against concentration gradient (pumps use e, exchangers use e from an ion"s concentration gradient) Electrochemical gradient difference in charge and chemical concentration across a membrane. Chemical gradient difference in concentration of a certain solute (creates ep, which moves ions by diffusion) Electrical gradient difference between electrical potential of solute (difference in charge) If chemical that establishes chemical gradient is electrically charged then difference in charge will create electrical gradient. Net energy to move ions is by electrochemical energy.
