Document Summary

Glands: an aggregation of specialized cells that secrete or excrete substances, such as the pituitary glands, which produce hormones, and the spleen, which takes part in blood production. Glandular secretions are synthesized by secretory cells and released from the gland in response to appropriate stimulus. All cells secrete a surface coat which allows cells to recognize one another; they also secrete mucus onto its external surface giving it the name mucosal. All together they form a protective barrier around epithelial cells creating a controlled microenvironment between the cells and extracellular space. Secretion occurs in response to the stimulation of a cell; the stimulus may be a nt or a hormone arriving at membrane of secreting cell. Apocrine secretions: the apical portion of the cell, which contains the secretory material, is sloughed off, and then the cell reseals at its apex.
