Document Summary

Endocrine reflexes (in most cases controlled by negative feedback: humoral stimulus: triggered by changes in composition of extracellular fluid, neural stimulus: triggered by neurotransmitter at neuroglandular junctions, hormonal stimulus: triggered by arrival or removal of specific hormone. Short-loop feedback: the response of the primary target tissue (1) feeds back onto the. Long-loop feedback: signals from secondary targets (tissue 2) control secretory activity. Actions of hormones on target tissues: kinetic effects, metabolic effects, morphogenetic effects, and behavioral endocrine gland. Effects: metabolic and developmental hormones (see table 9-7) Glucagon and insulin: peptides, originate in pancreas, targets liver and adipose tissue or all tissues except neuronal (insulin) ; plasma glucose control. Glucocorticoids: steroids that originate in adrenal cortex and target the liver and adipose tissue; stress hormones. Growth hormone: a peptide that comes from the adrenal cortex, targets all tissue; stimulates tissues growth and maintenance. Norepinephrine and epinephrine: catecholamines that originate in adrenal medulla, targets most tissues; increase cardiac activity, energy mobilization.
