Document Summary

Cml -> genetic abnormality with translocation of chromosome 9 and chromosome 22. All tumours have the same breakpoint - indicates it is genetic. But each patient has a different breakpoint. Mutations that are occurring in somatic cells - not in germ cells. Can also be epigenetic - change is not at the level of the dna sequence but can affect how the gene is being expressed and these changes are heritable. Mutagenesis - process by which mutations are acquired. Mutagen - something that causes mutations to occur. Carcinogenesis - process by which cancer develops. Individuals who have problem in their ability to correct spontaneous mutations or repair. Dna have higher susceptibility to cancer - higher risk of radiation-induced cancer. Single mutation is not enough to change a normal cell into a cancer cell. Incidence of colorectal cancer per 100,000 people as function of their age. Colorectal cancer is infrequent in young people, then shoots up with age.
