-science-evidence based reasoning, covers many fields, really good history is science

-traits-can be outside animals body,
-animals have adapted
-animals ACT as though they are purposeful
Case Study-the cuckoo
What is a cuckoo?
-they’re European, also found in Japan
-famous for cuckoo clock, sound is very famous
-don’t need to hang around that long-they are parasites to other birds
-do not provide parental care AT ALL
-all female has to do is just drop her egg out there in the wrong place and someone
else takes care of it-the social host of that parasite
-cowbirds do the same and some ducks
-made wooden models
-comparison between cuckoo egg and host egg-amazing mimicry, made wooden
models
-eggs hidden from the eyes of predators-equal differences between the cuckoos that
lay their eggs in a particular host nest-lots of DIVERSITY
-different host race for each cuckoo-highly adaptive
What do you expect about the discriminating ability of the different hosts?
not very good
Why are Dunnocks not very good discriminators?
is it a recent host?
So cued into sounds, can also be very strong selection of internal care
How do these host-race adaptions remain distinct?
-has to be genetic difference between speckled eggs
-interbreeding across all cuckoos-no evidence that males of the Dunnock race mate
only with Dunnocks females they go for anything no full speciation occurring
because of this
