BIO205 Lecture 23
- Lecture 23: climate change
- Reintroductions can be successful: the whooping crane (Grus Americana)
o Carrying out conservation practices by reintroduction
o Where a species used to exist
- We sometimes manage to protect before things look really bad
o Right off Nova Scotia coast
o Northern Bottlenose whales
o Permanent population; spend all their life in the Gully
o Good habitat for sperm whales as well
o Strongly organized structure
- Canada’s protected area
o Set up areas where only certain things or nothing is allowed in order to preserve certain
habitats or species
o Canada is one of the countries with the longest coastline
o Distribution is near the southern part of Canada
- Is this conservation?
o BIG MIRACLE movie starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinki based on a “true story”
o The community tried to save these 3 grey whales stuck in Alaska because the ice cuts
them off from the open oceans
o Russian ice breakers to break the ice
o 1 whale died while 2 made it out
o It was considered a “huge conservation success”
o Was this conservation?
The grey whales are not endangered so was it worth it to just save 3 whales?
Should conservation organization fund this?
Conservation issues are not as clear cut and have to considered how much
education value it’s worth
Culture practices? Some people states that they’ve been doing it for years and
wondering why should they stop now? Have to concern about other issues too
- Aldo Leopold
o “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity, belonging to us. When we see
land as a community, to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and
