Document Summary

Bio210 lecture 18b - digestive system accessory structures. Enamel - white part - consists of occlusal surface which is in contact with food. Secretions: saliva chemical processing by salivary amylase. Mumps is disease related to the parotid glands. Cirrhosis: hardening of liver where hepatocytes die faster than can be replaced. Hepatocytes regulate nutrients - next to sinusoids. Central vein empties into inferior vena cava. Pancreatic juice & enzymes such as pancreatic amylase & lipase. Parietal cells - important for low ph. Parietal cells indirectly secrete hydrochloric acid and keep stomach at low ph. Indirectly secrete hcl - cell membrane lining by lumen get hydrogen through cells from the carbonic anhydrase which is moved into lumen of stomach and so more h means lower ph. Co2 gets transported out of stomach wall - bicarbonate leaves and chlorate comes in through cotransfer - chloride ion moves down concentration gradient through lumen and keeps the ph low.
