Generally, fossils are in sedimentary rocks -Oxygen-poor environment= less decay – Low-energy setting = keeps fossil in original condition – Rapid burial in fine-grained sediment- preserves detail better, keeps oxygen out Permineralization: – Infilling of tissue by inorganic materials ex bone, petrified wood, organic parts filled by minerals Fossils provide incomplete, biased view of past life – Not all organisms are preserved- rare, lack hard
