Each theory is tested constantly, never proven just not disproven. Relationships between organisms can be represented by a single branching tree- species are clustered into groups with similar traits. Taxonomy: study of composition and relationships of taxonomic groups. Carolus linnaeus (1707 1778)- binomial nomenclature- genus name and specific epithed=species name. Morphological species concept: based on similarity of anatomy. Alteration of genes - new alleles-produces variation. Sometimes, the two data sets do not agree. Parsimony: the simplest explanation is preferred over more complex ones. Both are relative to one another- traits considered primitive for one group may be derived for the larger group to which it belongs.
