BIO342H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Dinos, Bone, Paleozoic
Document Summary
Mixture of features in the animal- it has feathers like a bird, it has teeth, claws. More of a dino feature, and all birds have short stubby tail but in dino they have long bony tail which is what the archeology has. Fossil is any trace left behind by an organism- truly evidence of ancient life, it can even be the behaviour of that animal preserved. 4 types: unaltered remains are very rare. Intact tissues / unaltered: very special circumstances, mammoths about 40,000 yo that drowned in frozen mud, bugs in amber. 3 key components: durable- resistance to decomposition, how fast something is buried- like road kill which is scavenged right away, but buried quickly has quick preservation, lack of oxygen- no chance for bacteria or fungi to decompose. Walking whale : the ankle bones showed us that it was pulley shaped- thus it supports genesis- they are ardeodactals.
