CHM120H5 Lecture Notes - Pasteur Pipette, Ketone, Alcohol
Document Summary
The purpose of this lab was to identify the unknown compound #58 using qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was achieved by performing a series of tests on a known compound and the unknown compound and comparing the two to determine the functional group of the unknown. For quantitative analysis, the molecular mass was determined for the unknown compound using the dumas method. By combining both the qualitative and quantitative analyses, the unknown compound was determined. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic compounds is important for chemists because it helps them determine what is in a sample and how much of it there is. There was no need to measure out exact values of the reagent. To measure 1ml or 2ml of the reagent, approximately 1 or 2 measures of the pasteur pipette was used respectively. Test tubes and pasteur pipettes are disposable.
