CHM120H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Hydrazone, Phenylhydrazine, Zinc Chloride
Document Summary
In the first you will be given five known compounds labelled as aldehyde, ketone, primary alcohol, secondary alcohol and ester and one unknown compound. In order to identify the unknown compound"s functional groups, you will test it as described in part 1, and compare the results of those tests with the results of the same tests done on the known compounds. In part 2. you will use the same unknown liquid and will determine its molecular mass using the dumas method. Combining the results of parts 1. and 2. should allow for identification of the unknown compound. Aldehydes and ketones both contain the carbonyl group. Aldehydes have an attached h atom while ketones do not, which distinguishes an aldehyde from a ketone. Aldehydes are easily oxidized to carboxylic acids, while ketones are oxidized only with difficulty. The test for aldehydes consists of treating a small sample with ammoniacal silver ion, containing the complex ion ag(nh3)2.
