CIN205H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Seismic Wave, Ocean Current, Water Cycle
Document Summary
Matter, the stuff that takes up space, is being worked on by energy in various forms. Energy is either from within (internal) or external. Internal energy (heat within the earth): drives deep processes: uplift (mountain building, formation of continents and oceans basins, earthquakes, volcanoes. External energy (solar) helps drive surface processes: erosion, floods, landslides, coastal processes. Drives the water cycle, ocean circulation and weather. Earth materials + energy = process [people] -> change. Note: once people interfere with the processes, process and change becomes a hazard. Energy in all geologic processes is conserved but it is converted from one form to another: internal heat. Incoming light converted to heat in atmosphere, oceans, and lands: gravity. Creates pressure within the earth: mechanical energy. Seismic waves, ocean waves and tsunami (energy traveling through matter) Plays a big role in deterring composition of the atmosphere. Includes humans: people have one of the largest influences of any organism in earth"s history.
