CLA204H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hekatonkheires, Crius, Erinyes
Document Summary
Chaos, then gaea (earth) then tartarus (place below erth_, then eros (sexual love). We don"t know where chaos came from, and gaea, tartarus and eros do not come from him. There is a deliberate vagueness in the early origins of the gods. Gaea is the one who fundamentally populates the earth. The children/lovers of gaea are uranus/sky, mountains and pontus/mountains. Classical mythology is patricidal and incestuous: gaea + uranus gave birth to the, titans (oceanus, coues, crius, cronus, hyperion, iapetus, theia, rhea, themis, mnemosyne, Prometheus: titan who sided with zeus against the other titans, maker of mortals made man from dust and water. Story not in hesiod: protector of mortals sneaks dire in a fennel stock to man; teaches man all the civilised arts. The story of prometheus" punishment by zeus tells of the greek view on sufering. Despite how much you might try to change your fate, ulimately your fate rests in the hands of the gods.
