Cosmogony - beliefs about how the world was created. Hesiod"s theogony: epic(long) poetry, composed in a particular metre; dactylic hexameter. Epic = wordy and long in writing (greek version: epikos) Hesiod composed the poem in the 18th century (he didn"t write it, he composed it) - formulaic language. Hesiod comes out ( rst person to name himself in poetry) He calls attention to his existence as the singer (trans. p. 132) The muses are the goddesses that represent poetry. He was listed by the muses who found him talented and set him to work to bring back the gods. Works and days: rules of farm work (what a farmer should do, when to plant, etc. ) Megalai ehoiai = the great such women as (the women who had sex with gods and produced heroic offspring) ; another great work by hesiod. Catalogue of women = type of poetry that hesiod is known for.
