Document Summary

** lecture versions are correct (but spelling can be various) Linear a: the language used primarily in crete from 3000-1450 bc (a mostly pictographic script that remains untranslated) Linear b: mycenaean language - found in 1450 because we assume mycenaeans took over crete and dominated the region (syllabic and used for economic purposes) Cultures change so much that religion changes along with myths. People eventually started to question the gods due to the philosophical movement. Religions used to be for civic/utilitarian purposes (ex. sacri cing an ox for zeus) By the 6th century, civic religion was becoming a thing of the past because greek world was expanding. The political identi cation of the greeks expanded - took a more universal perspective to their existence and the gods. People start questioning where they t in, what they believe in. Civic religion became to fail because it satis ed external needs (gods) and not the internal needs (humans)
