Agenda: social networking, mobile technology around the globe, what is cloud computing, what do we mean by convergence, end of classes review. 3 core themes: contemporary communication echnologies transform business models, green it, the future is networked. According to armbrust et al (2009) cloud computing refers to both the application delivered as services over the internet and the hardware and systems software in the datacenters that provide those services. Applications are available on demand on subscription basis. What are the social, economic and political consequences: outsourced it staffing, capital expenditure low, supports new businesses with unpredictable growth, commodification of computing power utility service like drinking water or electricity. Economies of scale afforded by statistical multiplexing and bulk purchases requires extremely large data centres.
