Someone sends a message, someone receives it. Each of the components are equally important to the process. Useful for seeing components of communication process. Does not account for the back and forth aspect of communication/conversation. White people protesting: young people, passionate, party gone awry. Emphasizes the important of the people on each side of the message. You are less likely to misunderstand a text received from a friend than a stranger. With friends you have rich context of the kind of person they are, their beliefs, how you usually converse etc. Viewer or reader shares meaning that are encoded in a text, accepts the preferred reading, which generally naturalizes the reinforces dominant ideologies. Viewer generally shares the codes and preferred meaning of the text but also may resist and modify the encoded meaning based on her social location, interests, history and experiences. Results in a contradictory readings of the text.
