Document Summary

Hills like white elephants hemingway: the hemingway style. Caused writers to rethink the relationship between literature and journalism: idiomatic language. Way that language is used in a given time, place, how individuals actually use language (slang: factual emphasis. Write in a way that is very immediate, direct, to the point, and lets the basic necessary facts rest on the page: impersonality. Remove as much of the author"s influence on the novel, reports to the reader in a very impersonal, reflective way. No side opinions, no choosing sides, who is telling the story, etc. Pure impersonality is impossible: imagist influences, direct treatment of the thing itself , whether subjective or objective. Just factual evidence: to use absolutely no word that does not contribute to the presentation. When you use more words then it shows the importance/enthusiasm: to compose to the rhythm of life, not to the rhythm of the metronome.
