Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer -scott mccload. Comics have these characteristics: sequence of separate images, preponderance of image over text, reprodictive medium; ex. Printed or other mass-production format: story about people/topics in society. Sequential art in the ancient world: archers attacking people on left, middle is people escaping the archers from water, right side displays an ancient city waiting to greet them from battle. 1890"s yellow kid : the text was written on the boys shirt because the text bubble was not invented yet. 1930"s & 40"s: comic books and superheros: the first time superman made an appearance in a comic book. Captain america: the superhero as depression/ww2 phenomenon. Largely an american invention: full advantage of limited colour palette.
