Looked at “dubliners” collection by James Joyce
Looked at
o‘Araby’- third story
o‘the dead’- final story
The stories both drift between Dubliners and the state of the nation
Both the stories are about national allegories
From ‘The Dead’: Gabriel national issues
The form of the short story suggests what a nation is and how the Irish cannot be split into
single people, but rather are a group of people with different feelings and thus different stories
‘The Dead’
An examination of the nation through it’s citizens
The collection was published in 1914
the main issue during this time was “What’s the future of Ireland?”
oto embrace Ireland as a distinct people or become like Britain (or West Briton)
oGabriel is called a West Briton
When you look at a map Ireland is west of the UK and so if it became just like
Britain it would just be the island west of the UK (aka West Briton)
There are two symbols that play a role in the story
oGaloshes: something that goes over your shoes to protect it during rainy or snowy
weather
oThe second is the fact that Gabriel marks himself as continental
The celebration is a family gathering and Gabriel speaks with people he does not know
oGabriel is forced to confront Ms. Ivors who is direct (or rude)
Gabriel meets his match
Ms. Ivors represents self-governing Ireland
Gabriel is thought up of as privileged (since he can travel to different countries)
When asked to come to the Isles by Ms. Ivors
Gabriel says no and instead said he is going to Germany
King William of Orange state, college Green, Dublin, 1894

Pat Morkin is Gabriel’s Grandfather
The Horse (Jonny) goes around the mill and is the mechanical portion when making glue
After Jonny gets old Pat starts to ride the horse (Jonny), and through habit it started to go
around the statue to king William
King William is the British king and an exemplar of the English monarch
oThe horse going around the statue of King William represents how Ireland is going
around in circles if it were to stay within the English monarch
Epiphany, January 6
Joyce chooses this day for the party within the story and is pulling from the cultural association
Gabriel has an epiphany
Where are the children?
Nothing about kids
Gabriel tries to get Tom (his son) and Gretta (his wife) to do certain things (like sports etc.)
cause he tries to control them
oSort of like controlling the future of Ireland
The story is populated by adults- married and unmarried
oFreddy, Lily and Ms. Ivors are the single people who will not move their ideals forward
into the future
Ms. Ivors: the passionate Irish who want to keep the traditions alive
Lily and Freddy: represent the actual people within Ireland
Possibly claims that none of the old generation is to come
Angel Gabriel
One of the angel’s that brings the news of Christ
The virgin Mary is informed by Gabriel about Christ and has an epiphany
What makes Gabriel different?
He’s travelled physically and intellectually around the country
There’s a class difference between Gabriel and the other people
For him, life can take on an aesthetic difference
oHe makes poetry (look at passage 2 on sheet)
