Document Summary
Sanitary landfills are engineered to minimize leakage of contaminants. A whole in the ground engineered to minimize the negative impacts of garbage put into it, and the leakage of contaminants formed in leachate. Bring the waste in and cover it over with clay or another sediment to cap it in cells. It has been sited geologically so that if there is leachate coming out, it will not join groundwater in aquifer. Looking for a site underlain by clay, very absorbent, including as plastic liner (geotechnical fabric to absorb contaminant or leachate). Pipes will collect leache, and pump up to leachate treatment system. Decommissioning: shutting down an industrial site and getting it ready for cleanup and repurposing. Growing cities have converted closed landfills into public parks (e. g. , beare road. They fill up, as in the garbage barge case. 1987: new york"s landfills were full; barge traveled to north carolina, which rejected the load.
