Document Summary

Lecture 8: geological system and plate tectonics (ii) In the case of seismic waves, there are different types. Surface waves: one group of seismic waves actually makes its way immediately to the surface and travels around the surface of the planet. Not that useful in understanding what"s inside the planet. Body waves: interested in these waves since it travels through the interior of the planet. The fastest and arrive to other side of the earth faster than s wave. They are slower b/c they are travelling outside and going further. They have sheer waves; instead of being alternating and compressing and expanding, instead the material is being deformed. Happens when it meets some kind of boundary. Refraction: when a wave passes through a boundary and starts to slow down if they travel quickly through some layers than others. As they go into greater depth, the materials are under higher pressures and more compressed.
