ERS103H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Absolute Dating, Archean, Paleozoic
Document Summary
You need something for the sediments to deposit on. The sediments on the bottom are always going to be older. The fossils in those layers are going to be older. You can use the same geology on the same hills. Marker bed: use to map certain areas. Something that allows us to date fossils. Some index fossils can be used for specific regions. Good preservation: want the fossil to be hard (have a tooth, bone etc) Narrow stratigraphic range: needs to be narrow in terms of a specific time. Species duration are within 1-2 million years. (very good) Red words aka definitions on this slide. Time prior to which we had rocks. We have the most rocks from here. Need to know 4 eras plus all definitions. Isotopes: elements that are the same but one weighs more than the other. The protons are the same but the neutrons are different.
